RALEIGH, N.C. -

Last week's abortion vote in the State Senate is why self-proclaimed "soccer mom" Christine Lang can now also call herself a 'Moral Monday protester.'  She joined many other women, and men, on the Halifax Mall in protest of the Faith, Family and Freedom Act.

Among other provisions, House Bill 695 would limit insurance coverage of abortions and require clinics to follow stricter regulations similar to those fore surgical centers.

"When we start to restrict these rights, we're going back hundreds of years in this country and it scares me for my daughter and myself, actually."

Monday, Gov. Pat McCrory faced cameras for the first time since that controversial vote.

"These are very complex and tough issues that deserve discussion and deserve review and scrutiny and thorough examination and that's what I'm asking for," McCrory said.

Outside the governor's mansion, more protesters reminded the public about a gubernatorial debate last year. A moderator asked McCrory, "If you are elected to governor, what further restrictions on abortion would you agree to sign?'

Then, he answered, "None." During Monday's press conference, he answered a similar question with more nuance, saying he wanted to make sure any bill that passed was really about protecting women's health, and not actually intended to close clinics.

"Is this a safety bill or this an access bill?" he said. "And that's what I think needs further discussion."

Further discussion will happen on Tuesday Morning. A House of Representatives health committee will discuss the bill during their 10 a.m. meeting in room 643 of the legislative office building.
