NC police officer resigns after shooting incident

Posted: Updated:

A police officer involved in a shooting at a checkpoint in Brunswick County last month has resigned.

Leland Police Officer Anthony Bernard resigned after an internal investigation concluded that his decision to fire his gun was justified. The report did say Bernard violated department policy by not immediately reporting that he had used his gun.

Leland town manager David Hollis says Bernard should have reported the shooting to his supervisor that night.

Investigators say two men were seen tossing items from an SUV approaching a checkpoint before they tried to drive the vehicle at the officer.

Police fired at the vehicle and one of the men fell out.

Both men were taken into custody and face assault charges.
