HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough County deputies arrested a man Friday who they said hit a woman with his car as she was crossing a street in Riverview early Thursday morning.

Matthew Ryan Fox, 26, was driving his Toyota Corolla down Boyette Road when he struck Diana Pena, 33, as she was crossing the street, officials said.

Pena was the passenger in a vehicle on Boyette Road when the car ran out of gas.  Pena got out of the vehicle and began to cross Boyette Road to go to the gas station.

Fox left her on the road for dead according to the deputies' report.  A passer-by saw her and called 911.

Pena, of Riverview, is at Tampa General Hospital.  Doctors listed her condition as stable.

Deputies caught up with Fox at his house at 9757 Tranquility Lake Circle in Riverview.  They found his Toyota covered with a sheet. The car had damages consistent with the crash, according to the report.

Authorities charged Fox with leaving the scene of a crash with injury.
