TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputies are looking for the driver who hit a woman early Thursday morning and left the scene. The woman is recovering at Tampa General Hospital Friday morning.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Boyette Road near U.S. 301 in Riverview. Family members and friends of 33-year old Diana Pena met with News Channel 8 on Thursday night. They say she is recovering but her injuries are extensive.

Her niece, Belinda Orozco, is a nurse at Tampa General Hospital, and described her injuries. "A renal laceration to her kidney which is pretty significant," said Orozco. "She's got, both her legs are broken, that requires surgery, she's got pelvic fracture, hip fracture. She's got lumbar fractures."

Authorities say, at last check, she was in serious but stable condition.

Investigators say Pena was with her boyfriend when her car ran out of gas. They say she was crossing the roadway to get fuel when the other driver hit her and left the scene. Authorities don't have a good description of the car but they believe it is a Toyota Corolla. They're not sure of the year or the color.

Orozco is just hopeful the person who hit her aunt has a conscience and turns him or herself in."We're only two years apart so she is like my sister. She's a bright person, she's very strong, very strong, very headstrong, a tough girl. Through all of this she's a trooper, you know? "

Anyone with any information on this case is urged to give the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office a call at 813-247-8000.
