ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Fireworks lit up the night sky in St. Petersburg. With the sound echoing off downtown condos and The Vinoy, and the reflection glimmering off the water, the 4th of July spectacular is always a crowd favorite.

Among those who enjoyed the bright and booming display was Marine Corp Technician, Kenny La Cruz. He says he gets emotional watching and listening to the show. "It always chokes me up because I know there are a lot of people, a lot of men have given their lives for us to have the freedoms that we have and they're not here today to enjoy it but we have to remember what they did. What they sacrificed." he said.

La Cruz served in the Marines and the Air Force.

From Puerto Rico, he's lived in the Bronx, and now lives in Brandon, where he is preparing to marry his fiancée from Costa Rica. He says, watching the fireworks makes him think about troubles facing so many people around the world. "Here in America, we still have rights and freedoms and that's something we cherish and we love and that's what brings a lot of people here."

On this his night when Americans celebrate our freedom, it's sometimes easy to lose sight of just how good we have it here. It's a fact not lost on La Cruz, who says people often stop him, shake his hand and say "thank-you" for your service. He says he misses the marine corp.

"It's always in me. It's in my blood. They just instill things in us, will always be in us for the rest of our lives and it's helped me a lot."
