Heavy rain brings flooding to Largo

Posted: Updated:
LARGO, FL (WFLA) -

Residents along Dahlia Place in Largo awoke to a soggy surprise Tuesday morning. Chris Girard found it as soon as he woke up.

"Got out of bed and put my feet in and inch of water," Girard said. "It doesn't make my day very happy."

The water covered the street and crept into several people's homes. Montz Green couldn't get his car out of his driveway to go to work, so he spent the morning sweeping water out of his living room and garage.

"Very inconvenient. Can't go to work. Can't do nothing, you know?" he said with frustration in his voice.

The city of Largo said this area had gotten five inches of rain in the last few day, and between 5 and 6 a.m., the neighborhood got another inch of rain. The amount overwhelmed the drainage system. It's not the first time it's happened here. Girard said the same thing occurred during Tropical Storm Debbie in 2012.

"It cost me over $10,000 for the flood last year on June 24th," Girard said.

Girard and his neighbors believe the city should do something to improve the drainage system in the area.

"The city of Largo and Pinellas County did not keep up with the movement of the water to improve the drainage in this area," Girard said.

But other residents don't have much hope that things will change.

"I don't know what they're going to do. Probably nothing," said Tom Cole.

Largo public works director Brian Usher said the city of Largo did inspect its drainage system on Monday evening, and inspectors didn't find any problems. But, he noted that the system was overwhelmed by the amount of rain the city has gotten in the last few days, and there is nowhere for the water to go. Usher said other isolated flooding has been reported in Largo. He said it's a case of too much water, too fast.
