SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN -

The Sullivan County School Board voted Tuesday to cut 33 part-time teacher aides, 4 central office workers and 2 vocational positions at Sullivan South High School.

The personnel cuts saved will save the district half a million dollars or $542,000 to be exact.

Sullivan County Director of Schools, Dr. Jubal Yennie, said some of those positions could be brought back pending the allocation of future federal funding.

The school board approved a budget that included $ 2.7 million in cuts and $1.8 million from fund balance. Now, the board can present the balanced budget to the county.

In addition to the teacher aides positions that will be eliminated, custodial hours will also be reduced from 40 hours to 36.2 weekly.

Part-time employees at Sullivan County Schools could soon be without a job, if the Sullivan County Board of Education approves Sullivan County Schools proposed 2013-2014 budget.

Tonight the Sullivan County Board of Education will discuss and vote on the budget,

which if approved will cut maintenance jobs and part time teacher aid positions. It will also look to reduce the amount the school system pays for teacher insurance.

With those cuts the budget will be balanced. A major feet for the school system with declining enrollment numbers and state revenue.

"At this point we've maintained all full time people as best we can. We'll lose some part time positions. That's what's really difficult for us, because we are at the position where we are cutting people, real faces, real people," said Dr. Jubal Yennie, Director of Sullivan County Schools.

The school system is currently calculating the exact number of positions that will be cut.
