Clearwater officer retires after questionable queries

Posted: Updated:

A former Clearwater police sergeant who was recently demoted to sergeant retired today before his bosses could fire him for sticking his nose where it didn't belong...hundreds of times.

Sgt. Richard Crean used his law enforcement access to driver license data to get personal information about more than 900 people.

54 percent of them were women between the ages of 18 and 33.

Crean's list of questionable queries includes tennis star Anna Kournikova, notorious sex-offender Debra Lafave, Fox 13 news anchor Laura Moody, a server at a local sports bar he looked up 14 times, past and present girlfriends, Crean's ex-wife and even the wives and daughters of fellow officers at Clearwater PD.

City of Clearwater spokeswoman Joelle Castelli--who was one of the people Crean snooped on--says Crean's list of unusual suspects would have gotten him fired if he hadn't quit first.

But the new isn't all bad for Clearwater's curious former lieutenant.

He'll receive more than $4500 a month in retirement benefits for his 21 years of service with the Clearwater Police Department.
