Nearly 100 years later, NC WWI veterans receive Purple Hearts

Posted: Updated:

95 years after their service to our country, a group of North Carolina WWI veterans received their Purple Hearts.

The Veterans Legacy Foundation organized the event at the state capitol on Saturday.

Sgt. Alfred page, Corp. Thomas Joyner, Corp, Joseph Greene, Pvt. Walter C Fitzgerald and Pvt. Colin Shaw were all honored.

"It means a lot that finally these young men who went off to war are being honored," said Tom Shaw. His great uncle Colin Shaw was one of the WWI veterans honored.

"Uncle Colin was a character. He was a singer, he was a musician, he loved life," recalled Shaw.

Thomas Joyner Jr. accepted the Purple Heart for his father who he's named after.

"It's great I just wish he could have seen it," said Joyner Jr.

"So many people get this award and are still over there, that didn't make it back home. They made the ultimate sacrifice. These awards will be given to my grandson who will be tickled to death with them," he said.

They're a generation who help set the standard for greatness.

"They gave everything for their country," said Shaw.

Now, nearly 100 years later, they are getting the honor they deserve.
