HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Deputies say an Orlando man was shot and killed on Saturday as he drove eastbound on Interstate 4 near Interstate 75. They have identified the victim as 47-year-old Fred Turner Jr.

At approximately 3:05 p.m., Hillsborough deputies, as well as Florida Highway Patrol troopers, responded to a call of shots fired in that area.

According to the Sheriff's Office, when they arrived, they discovered that two vehicles had been seen traveling eastbound on Interstate 4, and at some point, the occupant or occupants of one vehicle fired multiple shots at the other vehicle.

Sheriff David Gee says the victim was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher at the time of the shooting.

"During the time he was on the call with the highway patrol they actually heard the shooting. There was a series of shots," said Gee.  "We know a witness that saw it said that the car the victim was traveling in immediately pulled to the side. "

The suspect vehicle fled.

Just before 6:00 PM, the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office sent out an update saying that a shooting victim had died.  The victim's name has not been released but Sheriff David Gee says he lives in a nearby Tampa Bay area county.

Gee says it's too early in the investigation to say this was a case of road rage.

"We're reviewing the 911 calls and he just says he's being followed. He pulled out of a store and he was being followed," Gee said.  "He stated that there was nothing he would've done that would've made this person ... But we don't know. "

The only description of the suspect vehicle as of this moment is that it was possibly a small silver four door car.

Interstate 4 eastbound approaching Interstate 75 reopened to traffic around 11 p.m. Saturday night.

Deputies want anyone with information about this incident to call them at (813) 247-8000.
