Gov. Scott signs ID theft law inspired by 8 On Your Side

TALLAHASSEE, FL -

Governor Rick Scott signed a bill into law on Friday that was prompted by Bay area investigations into identity theft.

HB 691 makes it unlawful for a person to "intentionally or knowingly possess, without authorization, the personal identification information of another person".

The Senate version of the bill was drafted in response to joint 8 On Your Side-Tampa Tribune reports that police were finding people carrying dozens of IDs.

However, officers could not always make an arrest in these cases, since under the old law, they were required to prove the information would be used for criminal purposes, which was often difficult.

The Senate bill was sponsored by Arthenia Joyner (D-District 19).
