BRISTOL, VA (WJHL) -

A move that was rumored for several days came to fruition Friday morning, as Dewey Cashwell resigned as Bristol, Virginia city manager.

Cashwell made the announcement at a special called meeting of the city council, but both he and council members say it was a mutual parting.

"It's just been some things in the last few months that we've discussed that we maybe just didn't agree on..." said council member Ed Harlow, "performance always comes into the picture, but then there's other things, sometimes it's relationships"

Cashwell added "there are things that have come up in discussions with the council and my family needs and issues, it's just time."

Cashwell says he has accomplished much in his time in Bristol.

"I'm very proud of the fact we were able to bring the city's economy back," he said "its finances are very much more in order than when I got here."

The council voted 4-1 on a severance package for Cashwell that includes a year's pay, plus unused vacation and sick days.

Cashwell has served in the post for 3 1/2 years.

His resignation is effective June 30th.

"It's been my honor to serve the city of Bristol, Virginia for the past three years or more," Cashwell told the council, "and I wish the city well in all its future endeavors."
