Robotic surgery an option at St. Petersburg hospital

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG -

St. Petersburg General Hospital is now a designated epicenter for robotic surgery.

"It's based on clinical trials and patient outcome", said Deborah Worsham who is the director of surgery at St. Petersburg General.

The hospital has several doctors highly trained in robotic surgery including obstetrician and gynechology specialist Dr. Meena Jain. She's able to treat patients dealing with pelvic pain and fertility issues using robotic surgery.

"I was one of the physicians that resisted robotic surgery," Dr. Jain said. "I thought do everything with a laparoscope, but there is no comparison in the efficacy in what you can do with a robotic and laparoscopic procedures."

Sitting at a nearby computer station, Dr. Jain can direct the movements of the robot and use small instruments to reach otherwise inaccessible areas of the body.

With laproscopic procedures doctors can't always fix the problem and end up having to revert to open surgery.

With the robot, a patient's time spend under anesthesia, in the hospital, and on the mend is greatly reduced.
