Fayetteville police shoot man during death investigation

A Fayetteville police officer shot a man Wednesday morning while other officers were nearby investigating a homicide.

Fayetteville Police responded to a home in the 4500 block of Ruby Road just after 8 a.m. Wednesday in reference to a deceased person inside the home.

Thursday, police identified the deceased as Arturo Omar Walker, 36, of Lexington.

Chief Harold Medlock said while investigating the death, Solomon Butler approached Officer William Clements III, who was monitoring the perimeter of the investigation scene at about 9:30 a.m.

Medlock said Butler pulled out a gun and began firing, and Clements returned fire. Butler and Clements fired several times, Medlock said.

The chief and investigators were in the front yard of the home, about 20 feet away from the gunman, when he began firing, Medlock said.

"I don't like someone shooting when my back's to them. I'm angry. I'm very angry," said Medlock. "[It was] great police work by a cop who was on top of things and kept us alive and kept a lot of neighbors alive. There were a lot of folks in their yards."

Butler was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition. Clements was not hurt.

Only July 2, Fayetteville police obtained warrants that charged Butler with attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Medlock said the inside of the home was trashed, showing signs of a violent struggle. He said he believed Butler was related in some way to the home, but Wednesday morning he did not have further details.

According to standard procedure, the State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Clements will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
