Tampa men fight off intruder with gun and machete

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Tampa Police say a home invasion robbery suspect is in critical condition after his victims fought back. It happened at a home on North 10th Street just before midnight on Thursday.

Tampa Police say two men live in that apartment. One of them was sleeping on the couch when he heard a knock on the door. He opened it because he thought it was his roommate. Instead, it was a stranger with a gun.

Police say the two men struggled and the suspect managed to push his way into the back bedroom where the other roommate, Clifford Gray, was sleeping.

Gray told News Channel 8 he woke up to a gun pointed in his face. The three men started struggling.  Gray ran and got a machete. He said he hit the intruder with it several times and accidentally hit his roommate once in the leg.

During the struggle, police say one of the roommates grabbed the attacker's gun and shot him.

The injured roommate is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  Police say the intruder was critically wounded by the gun and machete. He's being treated at a local hospital.

Tampa Police say, at this point in their investigation, it appears the victims were randomly targeted by the attacker.

No one can say when the mountainside collapsing into this Wyoming resort town will give way. But it appears increasingly likely that when it does, it's going to take a piece of Jackson with it.
