FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
A Cumberland County teen is facing drunk driving charges and another teen is in critical condition after a single vehicle crash near Rim Road and the Fork Road intersection in Fayetteville Monday night.

Officers responded to the area just after 11:30 p.m. in reference to a single vehicle collision involving a 2004 Toyota. Authorities say the driver of the vehicle, Michael Anthony Herman III, 17, of Fayetteville, lost control and left the roadway and collided with a sign. The car then continued on and hit a tree along the passenger side of the vehicle.

Herman was not seriously injured and fled the scene. His passenger, Charles Oatis Jr., 18, of Fayetteville, was found unresponsive at the scene and upon arrival to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was placed on an assisted living device and airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He is currently listed in critical condition.

The original release from the Fayetteville Police Department noted the passenger was deceased.

Herman is now facing charges of driving while impaired, driving after drinking under 21, felony hit and run, felony injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving and driving with no operators license.

Michael Herman was processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center and received a $21,000 secured bond.
