St. Pete teen accused of robbing 12-year-old

ST PETERSBURG -

St. Petersburg police know the location well.

The Citrus Grove Apartments are where convicted cop killer Nicholas Lindsey lived.  They've responded there many times for all kinds of crimes, and it's where they say Latellis Everett, 15, held up a 12-year-old for his bicycle with a semi-automatic hand gun.

Police say Everett wasn't even supposed to be in front of the Citrus Grove Apartments.  He was supposed to be home on court-ordered detention because investigators say he participated in a drive-by shooting at a birthday party late last month.  Four children were shot, including a girl who had a bullet lodged in her eye.

Watson Haynes, with the Pinellas Urban League, says providing jobs and activities for young people can prevent crimes like this.

"Absolutely we're not doing enough. That's why we have programs, we're in the schools. We're in the middle schools. We're in some of the neighborhoods in the communities," said Haynes.

He says young people like Everett are often exposed to violence at a young age.

"Sometimes it's a way of living. It's the community they come from and folk ignore those communities until a crime happens. Then we point to 'em and say, why aren't we doing anything over there?" Haynes said.

Police say arresting the same young people time and time again is frustrating.

"They generally grow up in an environment where this type of activity has been known to them. It's not necessarily their parents, but certainly maybe the neighborhood environment.  Kids they hang out with," said Mike Puetz with the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Police say Everett went berserk while being questioned, hitting an officer above his eye, and cutting him so badly, he needed stitches. Investigators also say Everett knocked out a window in the officer's car.

"All the red flags have been put up on this one and in this particular young man is obviously made himself a danger to society," said Puetz.

Even though he's not old enough to drive, Everett is charged as an adult with armed robbery, resisting an officer with violence, criminal mischief, and violation of probation.
