Hollywood heads to Tampa for film industry expo

Posted: Updated:

Hollywood is heading to Florida. The inaugural Florida Film Industry Expo is this weekend in Tampa.

"We're just trying to bring awareness, to raise the talent level here, so that Hollywood productions can feel comfortable coming to work here," said one of the expo's organizers Matt Ayotte.

A panel of Hollywood insiders will instruct participants on their particular field of expertise.

"They'll be leading various workshops on directing, acting, producing, casting directing, screen writing, special effects," explained expo organizer Ian Stevens.

Several movies have used the Bay area as a backdrop in recent years, including Dolphin Tale and Spring Breakers. A sequel to Dolphin Tale will start filming in Clearwater Beach this fall.

Expo organizers are encouraging more Floridians to learn how to work on both sides of the cameras.

"That way we can attract the attention of Hollywood that we're a reliable source to go to for their projects," said Ayotte.

Admission is $99 for the Saturday and Sunday workshops. There is also a red carpet gala at the Westin on Harbor Island Saturday night. For more information: www.ffiexpo.com
