PINEHURST, N.C. -

Hundreds of family, friends and law enforcement officers attended the funeral for Lt. Stanley Klingenschmidt on Wednesday.

Klingenschmidt, 57, was leading a charity motorcycle ride Saturday when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. He died from his injuries.

Klingenschmidt was leading a group of riders on a fund-raising ride for the Special Olympics.

Wednesday, a service was held inside the Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst. The room was full of people who knew Klingenschmidt, a 27-year veteran of the Southern Pines Police Department.

Those who spoke say he had a lot of responsibilities on the job and in the community, which is how so many people knew him.

"School things and scout things and baseball things and soccer things," family friend Jean Peters said. "He was straightforward, he was honest, he was always there for us as a neighbor."

People remembered Klingenschmidt as someone with a no-nonsense approach to doing the right thing, and they found comfort in the fact that he died doing three of his loves -- riding his motorcycle, helping others and serving as an officer.

Klingenschmidt's name will be added to the Southern Pine Police Department's Officers Memorial.
