McCrory urges schools to boost teacher pay

Posted: Updated:

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory is urging leaders in the state education system to devise ways to boost teacher pay and college graduation rates, despite years of deep cuts to per-pupil funding for public education.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Republican governor laid out five "pathways" for education, including such goals as getting businesses to hire more graduates, making reading and math a joy for every child and expanding charter schools.

North Carolina Association of Educators president Rodney Ellis responded that he would like to see McCrory's stated ambitions reflected in actual budgets and legislation.

Ellis said North Carolina teacher salaries currently rank 46th nationally, with proposals now under consideration at the GOP-controlled legislature to increase class sizes, eliminate teacher assistants and cut pay for teachers with master's degrees.
