DNC reports missing equipment from Charlotte

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

The Democratic National Committee says it's missing nearly $500,000 in equipment used at the party's convention in Charlotte last year.

The committee has sent Charlotte-Mecklenburg police a list of missing equipment, mostly computers, telephones and other communications equipment, The Charlotte Observer reported.

A total of 841 pieces of equipment are missing, including Blackberrys, iPads, iPod Nanos, MacBook Pro laptops, and printers.

Washington attorney Joseph Sandler, who is handling media calls on the issue for the DNC, says it's not unusual for equipment to be missing after the conventions. But Sandler says he thinks that Charlotte losses were higher than usual because planners prepared for events both at Time Warner Cable Arena and Bank of America Stadium.

President Obama was supposed to deliver his acceptance speech at the stadium, but the threat of thunderstorms moved the last night of the convention back to the arena.

Sandler says some of the equipment may have been kept by committee staffers. But he thinks some of the equipment was stolen by people not connected to the convention.

Sandler says he does not think Charlotte police will be able to find much of the missing equipment.

"Except to the extent if there were a significant number of things stolen and there is a lead they can pursue," he said.
