FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County authorities have identified the victims of Wednesday morning's fatal crash in Fayetteville that left two people dead and one in critical condition.

Just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Fayetteville police responded to the area of Shaw Mill Road near the Meharry Drive intersection in reference to a collision. Authorities believe a 2004 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Shaw Mill Road toward Rosehill Road, when the SUV crossed the center line and hit a 1999 Volkswagen and continued into oncoming traffic.

A 2007 Saturn traveling west on Shaw Mill Road toward Murchison Road attempted to evade the oncoming Jeep, but could not. The Jeep hit the Saturn and overturned onto the vehicle, according to authorities.

The driver of the Jeep, 23-year-old Shayla Cole, was pronounced dead at the scene and two occupants from the Saturn, 30-year-old Kennard Ruffin and 28-year-old  Marcel Roman Gist, were airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Gist, a passenger in the Saturn, died from his injuries. A third occupant in the Saturn, 22-year-old Devin Dixon, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The occupants from the Volkswagen were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. They have been identified as Markisha Pittman, 22, Jerry Telusma, 38, and a 3-year-old child.

The accident remains under investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
