Ireland Nugent takes another big step towards recovery

Posted: Updated:
ORLANDO, FL -

The 2-year-old who lost both her legs in a lawnmower accident in April, took her first steps since the accident.  If her final fitting goes well Tuesday, she'll get to head home to Palm Harbor and walk through her own front door with her family.

"Am I going to take my legs home," Nugent asked her parents as she was fitted with her new prosthetic legs and feet Monday in Orlando.

Her first steps, in front of a crowd of supporters, marked a major point in her road to recovery.  Nugent was playing outside in the yard April 11. Her father, Jeremiah, was putting the lawnmower away when authorities said he accidentally backed over his daughter.

It has been nine weeks since the accident. Surrounded by supporters cheering her on, Nugent took her new prosthetic legs for a test run before some adjustments that will return her to her feet. She even sported her favorite Dora the Explorer sneakers.

"It's huge. For us, it's from a tragedy to a triumph," Ireland's father said.  "We're getting close to that triumph where she is going to be walking again and doing everything she did before the accident."

The Nugent family expressed appreciation Monday night on the community support page for Ireland on Facebook.

"I am so very sad that we are where we are, but so blessed that we are here at the same time. She amazes me and keep watching her progress. She is going somewhere. Her opportunities are endless," one of Ireland's parents wrote on her Facebook page.

The next step, literally, is to help the 2-year-old walk with her new legs.

"It's sort of like teaching kids to wear shoes," said Stan Patterson, with the Prosthetic and Orthotic Association. "They always want to take them off and not wear them, but they'll get used to it, and Ireland will be doing everything she used to do as a kid within weeks," Patterson said.
