St. Pete bike co-op rolls out

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

If you're standing at the St. Petersburg Shuffle Board Courts you might not notice there's another sport waiting in the wings. In a small storage space, by the courts, the St. Pete Bike Co-Op has set up shop.

For Allen Loyd, it's been a labor of love, and a long time coming.

"I started commuting by bike in the 70s," Loyd said. "When I moved to Tampa I rode my bike on and off Davis Islands to my high school which was on the University of Tampa campus."

Loyd, along with other members, volunteers to work the co-op. You can bring your bike to the shop, and they'll teach you how to fix it. They'll even tell you where to get the parts.

"Eventually we'll make it so people can build their own bicycles from the ground up if they want," Loyd said. "Or you can come in and buy a bike that's been donated and fix it up."

The co-op has only been up and running for a few weeks. They already have almost 500 fans on Facebook. The concept of the co-op isn't new. Tampa already has one, and St. Pete has tried in the past. Loyd hopes this time it'll be different, and he can encourage others to hop on their bikes.

"It's a great way to sense the world," Loyd said. "You can hear the birds and see what's growing. You get a completely different sense of the city."
