Woman shot outside Hillsborough home

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The search is on for a gunman who shot a Valrico woman in front of her house early Friday morning.

It all happened in the 4800 block of Copper Canyon Boulevard.

In the wee hours of Friday morning, a caravan of deputy cars was parked throughout a neighborhood as investigators carefully searched the area.

At around 1:40 Friday morning, the Hillsborough County sheriff's office got multiple 911 calls saying gunshots were heard in front of a home.

One man who chose to remain anonymous said, "It's crazy how something like this can happen, especially out here in a nice neighborhood, you don't expect things like this to happen. Obviously they do."

But once deputies responded, there was something missing.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's office spokesman Larry McKinnon said, "When they got here, they couldn't find the victim."

They later learned 42-year-old Carmen Dean drove herself to Brandon Regional Hospital. Doctors said Dean has at least one gunshot wound.

Deputies say she was near her car when someone fired a weapon at her.

Dean has since been transferred to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition, and the gunman is still out there.

McKinnon said, "We're certainly confident that this was not a random act."

Hours later, as the sunrise, deputies were still combing the area. They interviewed Carmen Dean's husband and neighbors, and they're honing in on a motive. They have since finished processing the crime scene and they will continue to conduct interviews.

McKinnon said, "We're going to look at any prior history they had whether it's domestic related, any criminal activity they may have been involved in, their associates as well, and then try to narrow down what the motive may have been."

Deputies are hopeful to make a quick arrest.

"There's no concern for the neighborhood," said HCSO spokesperson Larry McKinnon."We are pretty confident they were being targeted... We're gonna find out who this gunman is, whether there's one, two or three."
