Winter Haven man arrested in attacks on women

Posted: Updated:
WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) -

A Winter Haven man with a long criminal history is now charged in connection with at least two violent attacks on women.

Winter Haven police say DNA evidence from a sexually battered victim lead to the charges against Roger Griffin, 36.

Investigators say on June 2nd, a woman was walking alone in the area of 7th Street and Sears Avenue NE, when a man jumped out of the bushes with a knife.  The attacker held the woman at knifepoint and demanded money.  Detectives say he got away with her purse and cell phone.  That victim later identified Griffin as her attacker.

On June 7th, another woman was walking alone in the 200 block of Avenue S NE when a man approached her.  Detectives say he was friendly at first, but then grabbed the woman and held a knife to her throat.  The man then forced the victim to walk to a vacant house, where he sexually assaulted her.

DNA evidence obtained in that case, and analyzed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement lab, identified Griffin as the attacker.

Griffin was released from prison in December 2010, after serving 5 years of a fifteen-year sentence.  His lengthy criminal history dates back to 1991, and includes aggravated battery, trafficking in heroin and grand theft auto.

If anyone has any additional information on these cases, or other cases that could have involved Griffin, they are asked to contact the Winter Haven Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 863-291-5620.
