TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Former Hillsborough Community College President Dr. Gwendolyn W. Stephenson passed away Thursday morning after a two-year battle with cancer.  She was 69 years old.

According to a press release sent out by the school, Dr. Stephenson was the college's longest-serving president, having served from 1997 until her retirement in June of 2010.

"Dr. Stephenson brought extraordinary leadership and thoughtful guidance to HCC and propelled the college into becoming one of the most admired and respected community colleges in the country," said current HCC president Dr. Ken Atwater in a statement.  "Her strong sense of fairness and ethics - and her unwavering commitment to excellence - transformed this institution and made it the pillar of quality education that it is today.    At a time when many would shy from the challenge of running this well-storied college, she ran toward it and met it head on with grace and dignity."

Dr. Stephenson is survived by her husband, son, daughter, and two grandchildren.

HCC says a memorial will be held for Dr. Stephenson later this summer.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the HCC Foundation in support of the Dr. Gwendolyn Stephenson Endowment.  This fund supports HCC students with financial need.
