TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The first of 15 surviving manatees rescued after being sickened by red tide was released Thursday in Charlotte County.

The female manatee named Cida returned to the wild near the Inlet on Gasparilla Island, after being treated at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo.

Crews will work on returning the rest of the survivors to Florida waters during the summer months.

The other manatees are finishing their recovery process at the Lowry's David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Hospital.

This year, red tide toxins killed almost 300 mammals, according to the Florida Fish and WIldlife Conservation Commission.
