Hole in road closed down busy Tampa street

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

In Tampa, 138th Street remains closed Thursday at Bruce B Downs Boulevard. It will likely remain closed for the rest of the week, city officials told us.

A 15-foot hole opened up in the street as a woman in a Nissan was making a turn Wednesday afternoon. She managed to drive away with only a flat tire and a dented fender.

The tow-truck driver who picked-up the car said the driver was lucky.

"She walked over there and look in the hole and she saw that could've been a lot worse," said Robert Reichold with Split-Second Towing. "Parts can be replaced. Her taking a nose dive into that thing would be a lot worse."

The hole is about five feet wide and about 15 feet deep. Thursday night city crews stuck a camera in it and determined it was a busted sewer line that caused the ground to give.

Stay with wfla.com, we will let you know when the roadway is repaired.
