Makeup wearing male student not allowed in St. Pete school

ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Chris Martin is looking forward to starting high school in the fall. But it's what happened on the last day at Meadowlawn Middle School in St. Petersburg that has him and his parents, angry.

Chris Martin, 14, asked his mother to apply eyeliner, eye shadow and lipstick to his face.

"I was happy as a mom to see he was expressing himself and feeling good about himself. And then when he called, I could tell that he didn't feel like that anymore," said Katelynn Martin, Chris's mother.

The call came from the Meadowlawn Principal, telling her Chris had to wash off the makeup.

Katelynn Martin says the principal told her, "Boys wearing makeup is unnecessary and that it was a distraction and it's kind of ridiculous to even ask the question."

Katelynn Martin says Chris decided to wear makeup on the last day of school, because of years of torment inflicted by fellow students and months of depression including a January suicide attempt.

"When he wanted to wear make up to school, I saw that kind of as a step in the right direction for him because, for so long, he struggled with being able to be himself," she said.

A a school district spokesman said she cannot comment about discipline applied to a student, but she did say there's much more to this story, and pointed to the student code of conduct.

It mentions students cannot disrupt the classroom, and that the dress and grooming of students shall be neat, and clean, promoting a positive educational environment.

Chris Martin issued a statement that says in part: "I want to make a difference for kids like me. When people ask me what message I have for other kids, I want to tell them to stay strong and don't give up. "

His parents are hoping school district policy will change.
