TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A busted sewer line is responsible for a hole that nearly swallowed a small Nissan car Wednesday afternoon.

Jasmine Rosa, who was turning right onto Bruce B. Downs from 138th, felt the ground give way below her and drove out of it.

"She had the momentum to get her out of the hole as soon as the ground gave way," said Robert Reichold, the tow-truck operator who worked with Rosa. "She walked over there and looked in the hole and she saw that it could've been a lot worse. Parts can be replaced. Her taking a nose dive into that thing would be a lot worse."

Her Nissan had a flat and a bent fender.

Late Wednesday night, Tampa City Wastewater crews sent a camera down into the hole that's 15-foot deep, 5-foot wide.

"We have a failure of one of our gravity sewers," Anthony Kasper, Director of the Wastewater Department for the City of Tampa. "It's a 36-inch pipeline and it looks like corrosion had eaten away the top of the pipeline."

The road will be closed for at least three or four days as crews make repairs.
