Deputies, volunteers clean former Tampa homeless camp

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough deputies teamed up with church volunteers to continue cleaning up a former homeless camp on church property.

The clean-up of a homeless camp off Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa began last month, after deputies relocated its occupants. Wednesday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and other agencies joined forces to finish cleaning up the site.

The site is on property owned by and surrounding the First Reformed Church of Tampa. Back in May,  volunteers and county officials gathered 3000 pounds of debris that included mattresses, televisions, shopping carts, tarps, and carpet.

Their goal was to clean up the rest this week. The pastor of First Reformed Church says they made an effort to take a compassionate approach to removing the homeless from the site, and tried to make sure they had a place to go.
