Report: Hundreds cut from IBM's Triangle location

DURHAM, N.C. -

An IBM employee advocacy organization says job cuts at the company's RTP facility began Tuesday night with 121 layoffs in IBM's Systems Technology Group.

Lee Conrad, national coordinator for Alliance@IBM CWA Local 1701, reports that more cuts are on the way for the RTP facility, where about 10,000 people work. Conrad was unsure how many cuts directly affected the Triangle location.

Conrad says employees began receiving notices Tuesday night.

The cuts are part of a plan announced in April to spend $1 billion to trim its workforce, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

Laurence Balter, an analyst at Oracle Investment Research, told Bloomberg that IBM will probably cut between 6,000 and 8,000 jobs globally based on the $1 billion figure.

IBM spokesman Doug Shelton would not comment directly on the layoffs, but said "change is constant in the technology industry."

"Transformation is an essential feature of our business model. Consequently, some level of workforce remix is a constant requirement for our business," Shelton said in a statement.

The Systems Technology Group has seen a 17 percent revenue decline in the first quarter. The company's total revenues were down 5 percent to $23.4 billion.

IBM's net income was down 1 percent in the first quarter.

Alliance@IBM is an employee advocacy organization that wants union bargaining rights with IBM.
