Margiotta: Merrill is leader to be Wake superintendent

Posted: Updated:
CARY, N.C. -

Former Wake County school board chairman Ron Margiotta told WNCN Wednesday morning that his understanding is Virginia Beach school superintendent Jim Merrill is Wake's top choice to be its next superintendent.

Margiotta said he had spoke to "county officials" and others outside the search but that he has not spoken directly to any board members about this.

Wake County brought in three candidates as finalists for the position. They were:

  • Dana Bedden, superintendent of the Irving, Texas, Independent School District
  • Ann Clark, deputy superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
  • James Merrill, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

The county expected to announce a decision Tuesday, June 4. But in a dramatic change, the board announced it was delaying its decision and announced Deputy Superintendent for School Performance Cathy Moore would serve as interim superintendent.

"That makes it seem as though you're divided," said N.C. State University political science professor Andy Taylor. "Also, candidates are a little nervous about committing to Wake County."

Merrill has been superintendent at the Virginia Beach City Public Schools since 2006 and was named Virginia's "superintendent of the year" in 2012.

WNCN's Jonathan Carlson spoke with sources close to the search last week who also implied Merrill was the leading candidate, but who said it was not a done deal.
