RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory has turned to the FBI's former chief in North Carolina to lead a state panel that makes recommendations to him on criminal justice matters.

McCrory has appointed Chris Swecker of Mecklenburg County as chairman of the Governor's Crime Commission. The governor planned to attend the swearing-in of commission members Wednesday morning in Raleigh.

Swecker is an attorney, former Bank of America security director, retired FBI assistant director and previous special agent in charge of North Carolina FBI operations. Swecker also helped lead a review of the state crime laboratory.

McCrory also said Tuesday he had appointed nine more commission members, including Catawba County District Attorney Jay Gaither and sheriffs Alan Cloninger of Gaston County, BJ Barnes of Guilford County and Donnie Harrison of Wake County.
