TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A 23 year old Tampa woman is in critical condition after a hit and run accident on Thursday night.

Family members say Ashley Johnson is fighting for her life as a result of the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident happened on Dale Mabry Highway at 11:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Tina McIntosh says she watched as a red pick up truck hit Johnson.

McIntosh says, " I saw her get hit and get hit and she went under the vehicle and it was pretty insane."

Johnson's step father says she was just trying to cross the road after a quick shopping trip, " She was crossing Dale Mabry when she was struck by a truck, run over, and left on the side of the road like a dog."

He says the family would like answers, "Somebody out there knows this guy. They know what happened. Anytime this happens, they confide in somebody and you're the one that's going to catch this guy."

The Florida Highway Patrol says witnesses were not able to say what the make or model of the red pick up truck is, but it possibly has damage to the front bumper and grill.
