Tampa skatepark may become historic landmark

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The Historic Preservation Commission of Tampa held a public hearing Tuesday to decide the future of the old Bro Bowl skatepark.

The skatepark, located at the Perry Harvey Sr. Park near downtown Tampa was built in the 70s and was among the first skateparks in the country, according to BroBowl.org

A city employee designed it to be a free facility for children and inner city teens.

The park has been in the spotlight before, appearing in newspaper articles, a video game and a documentary film, according to the skatepark's Website.

The commission had to decide Tuesday whether to assign a status of a historic landmark to it or level it and build a new one. The park is eligible for addition to the National Register of Historic Places.

You can sign a petition to preserve the park at BroBowl.org

After the hearing the commission members will make a decision about the park in the near future.
