Fund set up to help with funeral of Cape Fear teen who drowned

GODWIN, N.C. -

The family of Dustin Turner has set up a fund to help pay for his funeral expenses.

Turner drowned in the Cape Fear River Tuesday. Searchers found his body Thursday - the day he was scheduled to graduate from Cape Fear High School.

His body was found floating at 1:57 p.m Thursday in the middle of the river about a mile from where he went under.

On Friday, Turner's cousin Megan Shanaman said she set up the fund online to help her aunt (Turner's mother) Sandra Turner pay for final expenses. Mrs. Turner's husband (Dustin Turner's father) died when Dustin was five years old, Shanaman said. To add to her financial strain, Mrs. Turner does not work so she can give full-time care to her oldest son who is autistic, Shanaman said.

Turner, 18, was swimming in the river at the end of Old Bluff Road Tuesday afternoon when he went missing.

On Thursday, two search boats called off the search temporarily because rain made the undercurrents stronger and the water muddier. The boats later resumed the search and then found Turner.

He was found about three hours before Cape Fear held its 5 p.m. graduation ceremony.

Friend and classmate Branson Hayes, who is a Junior at the school, stopped by the search area after hearing Turner's body had been found.

"A lot of his even closer friends wouldn't be able to be out here because they are in graduation today," Hayes said. "So we wanted to be out here for support of his mother and his family members, just to be out here to be a shoulder they can lean on."

Turner attended a graduation ceremony rehearsal at Cape Fear High School Tuesday. Principal Lee Spruill said the rehearsal ended at 3 p.m. He said Turner and his friends went swimming after the rehearsal. As a senior at the school, Turner was scheduled to graduate on Thursday.

"He's going to be on our minds. He's going to be on everybody in the Cape Fear Community's minds," Spruill said about Thursday's graduation ceremony. "We're just going to be praying and hoping for the best."

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Turner went under water and did not resurface. Divers with the Sheriff's Office were called to the area in Godwin to search for the teen.
