Passport mistake allows Brown to practice with the Bucs

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Matt Brown is a player who is easy to look past.

He's only 5'5".

That's why even he is surprised the Buccaneers are giving him a chance to make the team.

"This doesn't happen to people every day," said Brown, "especially for people my size."

But what Brown lacks in size, the running back makes up for in speed.

As a senior at Temple last season, Brown won the Big East Special Teams Player of the Year award for his ability to return kicks. And kick returning is an area of need for the Bucs.

"He's quick as a cat," said Bucs coach Greg Schiano. "At the rookie mini-camp, when he came in as a tryout guy, he just worked his tail off."

Brown nearly wasn't available to the Bucs. He had agreed to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. But when Brown was at the airport to fly to Canada and sign the contract, he realized his passport had expired and quickly tried to order a new one.

"My agent called me, and soon as I picked the phone up, I said, 'Marty, look, I'm getting my passport. I'm doing it now.' And he was like, 'No, I got better news. Tampa Bay wants to sign you.' I just dropped my phone for a minute," said Brown. "I was at a loss for words."

So will Brown make the Bucs' roster? That's a task that might be too tall for him.

"Who knows what's going to happen?" said Schiano. "He's got a lot of things that he's up against."

"I love the game of football so I'd travel to the end of the earth, but I want to play in the big leagues with the top competition. I know I can play with the best," said Brown.
