Tampa officers fired for on-duty drinks at strip club

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor fired two officers Friday for consuming alcoholic beverages at the Penthouse Club, an adult establishment on Westshore Blvd. while on duty.

In a press conference Friday afternoon, Castor released the names of the officers.  They were identified as Officer Antonio Ortega, a 10-year veteran of TPD, and Master police officer Paul Madsen, a 23-year veteran.

"As you know, the Tampa Police Department is a very ethical and transparent department," said Castor. "It is very well respected by the community. And, this behavior does not reflect the hard work of the men and women of the Tampa Police Department. It's very embarrassing to me personally and to all of our officers. And, the citizens deserve better."

Castor said she was surprised that long-time veterans of the department could make such a serious error.

"If you have instances of the exercising of such bad judgment, it's usually younger individuals who don't have the experience. This is disappointing as an organization, but it's personally disappointing to me," said Castor.  "We have very high standards and we're a very, well-respected department. And, this is an embarrassment to everyone who wears a uniform."

Castor said the officers' supervisors were also suspended.
