TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A new public transportation system within Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority starts functioning Tuesday in Tampa. The first two weeks commuter can ride it free.

It is called MetroRapid North-South and both HART officials and commuters hope it will improve the speed and the public transportation service in the area.

The new route will run north on Nebraska Avenue from downtown Tampa then east along Fletcher Avenue near Telecom Park west of Interstate 75, according to HART's website,

The new system boasts sleek new green buses with Transit Signal Priority equipment. It allows drivers control the length of the green light at intersections. The buses have convenient lower floors.

The new stops have off-vehicle ticket machines and bicycle racks.

MetroRapid offers 15-minute service from Marion Transit Center to University Area Transit Center on the weekdays. HART officials estimate it could travel the 17.5-mile North-South route in less than an hour.
