Medical Examiner's office will perform an autopsy Monday on a 71-year-old man who died at a Lakeland gun range on the weekend in Lakeland.
It happened around 9:40 a.m. Sunday at the Tenoroc Mine Shooting Range. Dr. Jamie Gonzalez of Orlando says he was standing at the sixth shooting station, and his friend, Larry Simpson, 71, was operating the remote control for the clay machine.
Gonzalez told deputies he heard a shot directly behind him, and turned to see Simpson with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Simpson's shotgun was laying beside him.
Deputies say Gonzalez called for help and tried to resuscitate Simpson, but he was later declared dead. At this point in the investigation, detectives do not know how Simpson was shot.
The manner and cause of death will not be released until further investigation, tests, and autopsy results.
