The man at the center of a Thursday afternoon hostage situation in Spruce Pine, NC is in the hospital after police apprehended him following a 3 ½ hour standoff.
John David Hampton Jr., 32, of Erwin, TN held a gun, and at times two guns, to a woman's head and back during the entire ordeal at the Wagonmaster Trailer Park.

Deputies were able to gain control when someone dropped a cigarette lighter and hostage stooped down to pick it up. That instance gave officers the opportunity to shoot the suspect and apprehend him.

Hampton was shot in the face and is currently in stable condition at the Mission Hospital in Asheville. He is alert and is writing notes to staff at the hospital.

Thursday morning the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office ran a tag number on a stolen car from Erwin, TN. The car was parked at a mobile home in Wagonmaster Trailer Park in Spruce Pine. Deputies had also received a tip that drugs had been delivered at that residence.

Officers were dispatched to check on the car, they contacted a person on the phone who lived at the trailer. He allowed officers to search the mobile home.  That's when officers found Hampton sitting on a bed in the back bedroom with a gun to a woman's head.

The victim, also of Erwin, TN,  told deputies she only knew Hampton for only 3 weeks.

Hampton faces charges of  1st degree kidnapping, but other felony charges may be pending.

The Mitchell County Sheriff's Office had assistance from the SBI Special Response Team and at the time of the shooting a SBI negotiator was talking to him. Officers were able to get him food, drinks and a lighter. During the standoff he made cell phone calls and allowed the female to call her parents.

The sheriff also told News Channel 11 that the man is wanted for a probation violation for selling Schedule III and Schedule IV drugs, failure to pay child support and theft under $500. He was also wanted out of Virginia for felony probation charges.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation.
