Tampa moves forward with loud music ordinance

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The Tampa City Council is moving ahead with a new ordinance that would make drivers turn down their stereos.

The council passed the first reading of the ordinance on Thursday.

If it passes, the ordinance would prohibit drivers from playing their car stereos loud enough to be heard 50 feet away from the car.  Sarasota has a similar law in place.

First-time offenders will get a warning. If caught a second time, they will have to pay a $250 fine. The fine goes up to $500 for the third offense.

"Usually they just fly right by and it's not that big of a deal, but some of them, the music is obscene and there's children here," said Michael Jokisch, a resident in favor of the ordinance.

A second reading of the ordinance will be held on June 6th.
