New Vision drug addiction treatment in St Petersburg

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG -

It's a nationwide epidemic with reports showing prescription pain killers now account for more drug overdose deaths than all illegal drugs combined.

"I consider this to be a man made epidemic", said Dr. Oswald Williams.

Dr. Williams, an internal medicine doctor is the director of Medical Stabilization Services at St. Petersburg General Hospital, and is also a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Williams says the program called New Vision is showing promising results because it addresses prescription drug addiction on many levels.

"In a controlled environment, where an entire wing at St. Petersburg General Hospital is dedicated to people fighting addiction, we first medically treat the problem, then we address it through psychiatric treatment, and there are follow up programs in place by social workers." Williams said.

New Vision opened its doors in November 2011 and in a year's time 400 patients were treated.  Those who stuck with the follow up programs had an 86% success rate, still sober, at their 6 month follow up program.

You can check the program's webpage for the details on how the program works.
