POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The Florida Dance Theatre in Lakeland wants to bring the art of dance to all of Polk County.

Carol Krajacic-Erkes is the director of the dance theatre. She started the Florida Dance Theatre 19 years ago to teach children and adults the beauty of all forms of dance. Krajacic-Erkes said it's been an amazing journey growing from 60 students to over 250.

"The company attracts dancers from all over the country," she said. "There's only one dancer we have right now who actually grew up in this studio and this is the first time ever that someone who grew up in the theatre is now one of our contracted professionals."

This weekend the Florida Dance Theatre will have another first. They're hosting a major free event downtown to celebrate National Dance Week. Freddie DeJesus, the artistic director for the troupe said the even is free to public so everyone can come join them.

"Anyone who wants to come out, set up a picnic blanket on the beautiful lawn of the promenade on Lake Mirror on downtown Lakeland," he said. "They're welcome to come out and hang out and watch all these wonderful dancers that we've invited... along with the professional dancers of the Florida Dance Theatre."

The hope is to increase awareness of dance to both those interested in becoming dancers and people who just love to watch dance.
