Pinellas Humane Society offers help to pet owners

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

The Humane Society of Pinellas has launched a new initiative called Pinellas Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS), which they hope would help lower the number of pets surrendered in the county every year.

HSP representatives told us that in 2012, over 7,400 owners brought their pets to the HSP centers to give them up. According to HSP, the main reason for it was that the owners couldn't afford to take care of the pets.

HSP is starting PASS to help with the financial burden of pet ownership. The program's website lists places to get free pet food and litter, free and low-cost vaccines, and accessible spay or neuter surgeries. It also provides references to training and boarding services.

"There are so many resources available that pet owners could take advantage of, if only they knew they were there," said HSP's Executive Director Sarah Brown. "So we thought, why not help people make that connection?"

You can call or click to get PASS at PinellasPASS.org or (727) 755-1738, seven days a week.
