St. Pete company makes bomb blast resistant window film

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

When a blast hits a nearby business, the impact can be deadly. A local company makes a window film that helps protect people from flying glass and is on buildings all over the world.

Madico makes window film thick enough to hold the shards together even in a bomb blast. "For all of our years in northern Ireland, 30 years of terrorism over there, glass fragments accounted for 90% of all the injuries we suffered," said Simon Trundle is a counter terrorism consultant speaking at an international conference for Madico Window Film.

The company started in St. Petersburg 40 years ago making solar window film, then it added car window film, and in the last decade or so, added the safety shield for blasts. It manufactures the film on site at its 100,000 sq. ft. headquarters near Tropicana Field.

The increase in terrorism overseas means an increase in business here. Madico added 30 new employees last year.

" What we're seeing in the Middle East and Africa the highest growth rate on security applications. However if you look at China, the worlds fastest growing market, it's automotive growth," Jeffrey Plummer, Madico Window Films.

Here in the U.S. its used more to prevent injury from industrial accidents, like the one in West, Texas, than for counter terrorism.

It can hold up under hurricanes conditions too.
