Polk Sheriff deputy laid to rest

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

A funeral was held at First Baptist Church at the Mall Tuesday for a Polk County Sheriff's deputy who died in a car crash in Winter Haven last week.

Sheriff Grady Judd spoke at the ceremony. He said all the first responders worked to save Shane Robbins like he was their own brother.

Traffic crash investigators spent hours at scene, trying to figure out what caused the accident. Master Deputy Sheriff Joseph "Shane" Robbins was behind the wheel of the patrol car that crashed into a tree. Sheriff Grady Judd said Robbins was on his way to the sheriff's office headquarters to get his computer fixed. A fellow deputy, driving the other way on Bomber Road passed him just before the crash. They waved at each other.

Crash scene markers on the road show what happened next. Robbins veered right off the roadway, corrected the car back onto the road, and then crashed, roof first into a large oak tree.

"He's a man's man," said Sheriff Judd. "You hear the good die young. The great die young, too."

Master Deputy Sheriff Shane Robbins began his career with PCSO in February of 1998.  He served in various parts of the county in Patrol, as a Special Victims Unit detective, and as a Homicide detective. He received a lot of platoon recognitions, accomplishment reports, bureau, division, department, and Sheriff's commendations for his service. He loved his job, his friend at the office said.

Sheriff Judd said those who knew Robbins best knew that he served at whatever cost.

"He always ran in when others ran out," he said.

Robbins leaves a wife Alisa and five children. If you want to make donations to the family, please make checks payable to:
