Four hurt in St. Petersburg party shooting

Posted: Updated:
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

St. Petersburg police say they have leads and are working to make an arrest in a shooting at an outdoor birthday party Saturday night that injured four people under the age of 16.

Mimi, who didn't want to be identified by her full name, was having a 15th birthday party, with a DJ in the yard on 3rd Ave. South. "They started shooting and everybody started running and two people I know got hurt. I just think it was really horrible," said Mimi.

Police say about 150 people were in the street at 10:30 p.m. when someone in a white car drove-up and started firing into the air. "Someone in the party we believe returned fire towards the vehicle and struck 2 occupants who showed up at the hospital." said Michael Puetz, St. Petersburg Police spokesperson.

After the shooting, two 15 year old boys, police believe were in the car, were dropped off at the hospital. One remains in critical condition.

That same night Debra Shorter's 12 and 13 year old grand kids came in and collapsed on the front porch of her St. Petersburg home. "They came here running and my daughter screamed and grabbed them and got in the car," said Shorter. The kids had snuck out to the birthday party several blocks away on 3rd Avenue South. They were shot, and their cousins rode them back home on bicycles. The 12 year old boy lost an eye and his 13 year old sister has a shotgun pellet lodged in her nose.

"It hurts me so bad,I don't want my grandchildren out of my eyesight anymore," said Shorter, victims' grandmother.

Police believe rival neighborhood groups fired the shots.
